The runs
I've called my vet about this, but they're pretty much no help. Cricket was spayed at about midnight on Thursday night/Friday morning (24 hour vet-they do their routine surgeries at night). She had a very difficult time coming out of the anaesthesia, or was badly affected by the combo of tramadol and the anaesthesia. I picked her up at 6:30 Friday evening, and she was drooling and really out of it. She drooled MASSIVE amounts that night (soaked two towels), and had bad, liquid stool. She was more alert the next day, and had stopped drooling. I continued the tramadol, and didn't have any further drooling, but the runs continued. Discontinued the tramadol yesterday morning. She's very bright, alert and happy and her incision site looks wonderful-healing beautifully, no signs of infection...but the runs continue. I've had her on a bland diet for three days-nothing but ground hamburger and rice. She refuses to eat yogurt or pumpkin, which is really what I want to get into her.
Any thoughts on what could be causing this? Should I force-feed her the pumpkin and yogurt? I can blend them and syringe them into her if needed. All my vet said is that some dogs are more sensitive to pain medication and anaesthesia. Had no suggestions and didn't seem concerned, but I am-this is four full days of this.

Re: The runs
I think I would be forcing the pumpkin to try
and firm it up some, poor girl. I assume she
is drinking and not getting dehydrate.
Check with your vet to see if you could give
her a little Imodium to dry it up too.

Re: The runs
Thanks Cindy. I mixed up a yogurt/pumpkin blend and syringed it into her along with a little honey. I've done that twice with about 9 ML's each time. Hopefully that will help. If she's not better by tomorrow night, I'll call about the immodium. I've been very lucky so far-she's pooped on piddle pads in her confinement pen or on the kitchen floor (linoleum) and not on the carpet.
Re: The runs
Not sure if this would be a good idea because of her spay but if mine get a little ick in the tummy I give them cheese or chicken necks
Re: The runs
I keep acidophilus capsules in the fridge, which is a "probiotic complex for complete intestinal and digestive health". I have the capsules so I can tease them open and sprinkle some of the powder on the food. It can't hurt and it may help. It's a handy thing to keep around.
I hope poor Cricket feels better soon.

Re: The runs
definitely some sort of pro biotic to settle her tummy and get some good bacteria in there as well as a turkey or chicken neck or wing.....try giving half of it at first to just firm her up but not so much where she starts straining....if chalky, cut back on the bone - if pudding like add more bone. I hope she feels better soon

Any improvement yet?

Another good thing I have found to have on hand :: great for baby pups too is scour ban :: a pink liquid solution used for scour in calves : it has an antibiotic in it too and I get it from the stock feed co or te vet (more expensive there though LOL )

She's doing much better. She's back to eating regular kibble and the stools are firm. She's made it through two nights in a row now without an accident again, so I think she's sorted out.

Re: The runs
Great to hear she is back to normal.
You worry that they have picked something up at the vets.
