How does one know if a dog has an Ewe neck? What are the genetic's on it...is it passible to offspring or does it randomly occur? What are the side effects of an ewe neck and does it cause problems to a dog with it. Anyone have any photo's?

I dont know a lot about ewe necks but from what I have heard they should not be bred from : a true ewe neck does stuff a dog shouldnt be able to do with its head :From what I have been told and common sense tells you, vertebrae are only meant to go so far :: I would think a dog should be able to lift its head up no higher than straight up from the base of the neck :: they are not supposed to be able to bend it back any further . I spose its a little like us trying to bend our neck over our backs!!! Be interested to read others comments on this topic Smile

A Ewe neck is a neck that is arched so that the top line of the neck is concave (curved inward) and the bottom is convex (curved outward). I like the page link below to review structure. It is not a dachshund page, but it gives definitions of terminology used across the breed board and shows the bones in an xray form with lines drawn to demonstrate conformation.

Hope it helps,

I have got all Pat Hastings books and DVD's and they are very good visually as well easy to understand text, well worth the price to get them direct from her which was all that was possible back then, now Amazon does them.

Some examples I have seen online the top of the dogs head has touched the back.

Sorry off topic but had to comment on the pups being suspended, must be very hard to do with the larger breed pups even at 8 weeks.
